Car history: |
Possible astronaut Gus Grissom former car delivered to JIM RATHMAN CHEVROLET, INC , Melbourne Florida 3.55 rear axle Prior owners 1967-early 1970's era : Jimmy Golden , Alton McCaleb and Sandra & Dickie Sledge living in Huntsville Alabama area Car was sold to Alton Mcaleb by used car lot UnderwoodHanback Motors in Florence Alabama 1965 Glenn green coupe history OK, here it goes, hope you guys can help. I have a 1965 coupe that I purchased back in 1999. The car has not been driven on the road since 1973. I have traced the cars history back to around 1967, I also know the original dealer who took delivery of the car when it shipped from the factory. Let me expand on what I have, the car was delivered new to Jim Rathmann Chevrolet in Melbourne, Florida, I have verified this through the NCRS shipping data report. From 1965-1967 I am not certain of where or who had it. I have heard rumor that the car belonged to one of the mercury astronauts. I won't say which one yet, but I will say that during restoration I found the same last name as one of one of the original seven written in very old ink pen on a strip of equally old masking tape on the top of the radio. The car ended up in and around the Huntsville, Alabama area from 1967-until the mid 70's. The previous owners in Alabama starting with 1967 were Huntsville Auto auction, to Ambrose Underwood used cars, to Jimmy Golden, to Adam McCaleb, to Dickey Sledge (traded a 1969 427 coupe for the car), to Jim Elwood Murphy(who had the car painted orange metal fleck) to Larry Clemens (who wrecked the car in 1973)All of these owners were in the Florence/Huntsville area. From there the coupe went through three owners in central Tennessee.(Oak Ridge area) First Charles Clark, to Jimmy Griffin, to Bob Brown. Mr Brown traded the car to Ken Maidment here in North Carolina. I purchased the car from Mr. Maidment in 1999. So as you can see I have a great deal of information on the car, my main goal is to fill in the blanks from 65-67. I have met with and spoken to Mr. Rathmann, but he could not find the original invoice. He does still have or at least he did in 2000 retain much of the paper work on the astronaut's cars. The car was built on the 27th of November in 1964, and it has 13 options, so I think someone fairly well off had it new. I know that the astronauts leased the cars for a dollar a year, and they were never registered in their names. Here is the info on the car 1965 Glenn Green coupe, white/black vinyl interior,327/365hp, factory air. Serial number 194375s103138. If you can assist me in solving this quest, I would enjoy hearing from you. Thanks, Marc |
